Will the Real Community Bank Please Stand Up?

Building a strong community bank begins with building a strong community. Northfield Savings Bank is a real community bank, founded by a schoolmaster and a haberdasher who believed a local community bank was needed. More than 143 years later, the Bank continues this community-minded tradition.

It is part of the Bank’s mission to donate 10% of profits to Vermont community organizations. In disbelief, some skeptics may say, "When pigs fly!" But this is our way of doing business. This is how we make pigs fly, everyday, at Northfield Savings Bank.

Governor Appoints Pelletier to Chair VHFA

November 2009 - Governor Jim Douglas appointed Thomas N. Pelletier of Montpelier to be chairman of the Vermont Housing Finance Agency (VHFA) Board of Commissioners. The change took effect upon the Governor's appointment Tuesday.

"Tom's been a highly-respected member of Vermont's lending community for more than a decade and has served on our Board since May 2008," says Executive Director Sarah Carpenter. "We welcome him as VHFA's new Board chairman."

Pelletier has been President and Chief Executive Officer of Northfield Savings Bank in Northfield since 1998. He serves as a Director of Public Television of Vermont and Norwich University Applied Research Institutes, Ltd.; and is a member of the Community Bankers Council of the American Bankers Association.

Pelletier replaces Lisa Mitiguy Randall who stepped down after nine years as Board chair. She will continue to serve on the Board for the remainder of her term.

"The Agency wishes to thank Lisa for her dedication and leadership over the years," Carpenter says. "We look forward to her continued good work as a VHFA Commissioner."

VHFA's Board of Commissioners governs the Agency. The Board includes four ex-officio members and five members appointed by the Governor of Vermont, representing private and public lending, real estate, and housing development interests.

The Vermont Legislature created VHFA in 1974 to finance and promote affordable housing opportunities for low- and moderate-income Vermonters. Since its inception, the Agency has helped approximately 26,500 Vermont households with affordable mortgages and financed the development of approximately 7,700 affordable rental units.

New Anti-Hunger Model Shows Real Results in Vermont Communities
July 17, 2008 – Burlington, VT – A new report highlights successes of the first two years of an exciting local partnership to end hunger. In mid-2006, the Northfield Savings Bank Foundation awarded a three-year, $450,000 grant to the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger to develop a community-based anti-hunger model in Washington and Chittenden Counties. The model, dubbed the “Community Hunger Assessment, Intervention & Resources Project”, uses assessment of existing resources, public education, community mobilization, and technical assistance to build strong nutrition safety nets in the target region.

“This report shows that after just two years of the partnership, more kids in Washington and Chittenden County are being fed,” says Robert Dostis, Executive Director of the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger, “For example, in Washington County, access to summer food is greatly improved – in 2006, 184 children accessed summer food at 7 meal sites. This summer, an estimated 350 children will be served at 12 sites. That’s an increase of 90%. This kind of program improvement would not have been possible without the help of the Northfield Savings Bank Foundation.”

The comprehensive report on the first two years of the partnership was prepared by the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger, and can be viewed on the Campaign’s website at www.vtnohunger.org/CHAIRYear2Report.pdf. In addition to outlining the growth in nutrition program participation, the report also describes the work of the Hunger Councils of Washington and Chittenden Counties – which are comprised of over 80 community leaders who have come together to help strategize solutions to hunger in their hometowns – and many of the other exciting results of this innovative partnership.

Tom Pelletier, President and CEO of Northfield Savings Bank, is pleased with the results of this partnership to date: “On making the decision to consolidate its charitable giving with the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger, the Foundation’s Board of Directors hoped to see a significant reduction in childhood hunger. This report illustrates the successes of the past two years. We are very excited to see how the project will continue to grow in the coming year.”   Details >>
